The Extreme Plasma Physics of Cosmic Rays

octubre 1 / 4:15 pm - 5:30 pm

Prof. Ellen Gould Zweibel
Department of Astronomy
University of Wisconsin–Madison

Galaxies such as the Milky Way are pervaded by diffuse gas. About one in ten billion of these galactic gas particles is a cosmic ray, a charged particle traveling at nearly the speed of light. Despite being few in number cosmic ray particles carry about as much energy as the rest of the gas, in defiance of the laws of thermodynamics. I will show how classical mechanics, electrodynamics, and statistical mechanics together with gas dynamics come together to explain how cosmic rays acquire their energy and affect the structure and evolution of galaxies. The image shows a galactic outflow driven by cosmic rays.
