High energy emission in active galaxies from the radio band and the opportunity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Active galaxies provide and opportunity to study high energy processes involving  photons, particles and magnetic fields near black holes at regimes not available in laboratories. Despite recent progress the precise location of the region that generates the observed gamma-rays from these sources has not been well determined. I will present the main findings of the Caltech-OVRO 40 meter telescope program that has been monitoring the 15 GHz flux density of about 1800 blazars twice per week since 2008, aimed at attacking this problem in combination with data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The findings include constraints on the relative location of the radio and gamma-ray emission site in blazars and a characterization of the variability of these sources. I will finish by briefly introducing the Cherenkov Telescope Array and describing the main scientific opportunities it opens for the study of active galaxies
