Flat Band Photonic Lattices: fundamental and dipolar excitations

We report our recent experimental progress on Flat Band (FB) photonic lattices. We will review the transport properties and the first observation of localized FB modes on a two-dimensional Lieb lattice. Then, we will present some results on several quasi-1D systems, where we have experimentally excited different localized FB states. In particular, we will present results on Sawtooth, Stub, Kagome and Honeycomb ribbons where we have been able to propose new mechanisms for the implementation of all-optical logical gates using the robust propagation of information through a given system. All the previous results are based on the isolated excitation of fundamental modes on every waveguide of a specific lattice. However, we have recently implemented a controlled excitation of higher-order modes on photonic lattices, where we were able to experimentally demonstrate enhanced transport properties of dipoles in several waveguide arrays. More interestingly, we have been able to excite, for the first time ever, two different dipolar flat band modes on a two FB Graphene ribbon system. Additionally, we have theoretically proposed a simple 1D lattice which supports the more localized FB mode ever: a state occupying only one lattice-site, originated due to the interaction between fundamental and dipolar states. At the end, it is our aim to comment about a single method to construct FB systems, which is based on the physical properties of small arrays.
